Why Fall Is Laser Season — and What to Book Now

Fall is laser season because lasers target pigment, and a tan competes with it — raising the risk of burns and lasting discoloration. From September on, less sun means safer treatment at full-strength settings. It is also the only way to finish a multi-session series — hair removal, tattoo removal, pigment resurfacing — before summer returns.

Why can't you get lasers in summer?

Every laser we use works the same basic way: it sends energy that a specific target absorbs. For hair removal, that target is the pigment in the follicle. For tattoo removal, it is the ink. For resurfacing, it is the unwanted melanin sitting in your skin. The problem with a tan is that it puts competing pigment in the way— and even a light one counts. Tanned skin absorbs energy meant for the target, which raises the risk of burns, blistering and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, the stubborn brown discoloration that can take months to fade.

That leaves a good provider two honest options: turn the settings down to a conservative level, which means a weaker result for the same money, or reschedule you until the tan fades. Neither is what you wanted when you booked. Then there is the back half of the equation — freshly treated skin is temporarily more photosensitive, so sun exposure right after a session is one of the leading causes of complications and pigment rebound. In July, keeping a treated area covered for weeks is a chore. In November, it happens by itself.

There is a bonus, too. The pigment summer leaves behind — new freckling, blotchy tone, darker spots along the cheekbones — usually becomes obvious in the fall. That is exactly the moment to correct it, when the sun that created it is at its weakest.

What should you book first?

Start with whatever takes the longest. Series length, not urgency, should set your order — here is how we sequence a fall calendar in Anaheim.

1. Tattoo removal — the longest runway. Laser tattoo removal starts at $225 per session on our PicoWay picosecond laser, and sessions sit roughly 6–8 weeks apart so the skin can clear fragmented ink between visits. Full removal commonly takes multiple sessions, which is why a September start matters: by spring you could have four visits behind you instead of one. We also use the DESCRIBE PFD Patch, which allows up to four times as many laser passes in a single visit — more progress per appointment, and we have been removing tattoos here since 2001.

2. Brow and eyeliner ink — a shorter, faster win. Eyebrow tattoo removal is $350 per session with aftercare products included, and most people need 2–4 sessions on average depending on ink color, quality and depth. Eyeliner tattoo removal is $795. Because the face is the hardest area to keep out of the sun, this is one of the clearest arguments for treating in the cooler months.

3. Hair removal — the classic fall booking. Laser hair removal on the GentleMax Pro Plus runs $70–$268 per area depending on size, and typically takes 6–9 sessions — not because the laser is slow, but because hair has to be treated during its active growth phase, and only a fraction of your hair is in that phase at any moment. That biology is the whole reason May is the wrong month to start.

4. Pigment and texture — undo the summer. PicoWay Resolve resurfacing treats sun damage, pigment, melasma and texture at $200–$600 per session depending on the area. Pair it with a medical-grade home regimen — we build yours from a 3D skin analysis using ZO Skin Health and SkinBetter Science — so the laser is not fighting your daily routine.

5. Legs — while they are covered anyway. Vein removal starts at $200 for small areas with the GentleMax Pro Plus laser, or $450 for Asclera sclerotherapy. Treating in fall means the healing window falls during pants-and-boots weather. Not sure which list you belong on? Browse by what is actually bothering you and we will map it to a plan.

How long does each series take?

Here is the math that makes fall booking worth it. Count backward from the first warm weekend you actually care about — then find the treatment below and see when you would need to start.

TreatmentTypical sessionsSpacingReady by
Laser tattoo removal (PicoWay)Multiple — varies with ink color, size and depthRoughly 6–8 weeks apartA September start puts about four sessions behind you by spring
Eyebrow tattoo removal2–4 on averageSpaced several weeks apartOften complete before spring
Laser hair removal (GentleMax Pro Plus)6–9, because hair must be in active growthSpaced several weeks apartFinished for summer if you start in early fall
Laser skin resurfacing (PicoWay Resolve)A series, planned at your consultationSpaced several weeks apartSummer pigment corrected by spring
Vein removal (laser or sclerotherapy)Varies with vein size and numberSpaced several weeks apartLegs ready before shorts weather

Session counts are typical ranges, not promises — your plan depends on your skin, your hair or ink, and how your body responds. You will get a realistic number at your consultation.

Do I still need sunscreen in fall?

Yes — and this is the part Southern California clients most often want to argue about. Cooler weather and shorter days lower your daily UV dose and your outdoor hours, but they do not switch the sun off. Anaheim gets usable UV in December. What fall really buys you is a smaller, more manageable exposure, not zero exposure.

So the rule does not change: daily SPF 30 or higher, before, during and after your laser series. Before, so you arrive without a tan and can be treated at effective settings. During, so pigment does not creep back between sessions. After, because treated skin is temporarily more photosensitive and that is when rebound pigment likes to appear. Sunscreen is not an add-on to laser results — it is half of the treatment. A brightening facial or peel between laser sessions can keep things moving in the meantime.

What does it cost to start?

Less than most people expect, because you pay as you go rather than all at once. Laser tattoo removal starts at $225 per session; eyebrow tattoo removal is $350 per session with aftercare included, and eyeliner removal is $795. Laser hair removal is $70–$268 per area, so a small area like the underarms sits at the bottom of that range. PicoWay Resolve resurfacing runs $200–$600 per session, and vein removal starts at $200 for small areas or $450 for Asclera sclerotherapy.

Because a series is spread over months, a fall start also spreads the cost over months — one of the quieter advantages of not waiting until spring. Your consultation is where we turn those ranges into a real number for your area and your goal.

When should you actually book?

Fall calendars fill from the outside in — September and October are the busiest laser weeks of our year, because everyone who spent August at the beach shows up at once. If you want a specific day and time each month for a six-session series, the earlier you get on the schedule, the easier that is to protect. Call us at (714) 533-4777 or book a consultation and we will build the timeline backward from the date you want to be finished. And if you are still deciding what to treat, the rest of The Skin Scoop breaks down each option in detail.

Fall laser season FAQ

Why is fall the best time for laser treatments?

Lasers work by targeting pigment, and a tan adds competing pigment that raises the risk of burns, blistering, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Fall brings less incidental sun, cooler weather, and fewer outdoor hours, so your provider can treat at effective settings instead of conservative ones. It also gives you the months a multi-session series needs before summer arrives again.

Can I get a laser treatment if I have a tan?

Usually not at full strength. Even a light tan means extra pigment competing with the target, so a responsible provider will either dial the settings down — which means weaker results — or reschedule you until the tan fades. Waiting is not a sales tactic; it is how we avoid burns, blistering and lasting discoloration on your skin.

How long before summer should I start laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal typically takes 6 to 9 sessions because hair only responds while it is in its active growth phase, and sessions are spaced several weeks apart. Starting in early fall gives that series the months it needs, so you finish before shorts and swimsuit weather instead of starting in May and chasing results all summer.

Do I still need sunscreen in the fall in Southern California?

Yes. Orange County gets usable UV year round, and freshly treated skin is temporarily more photosensitive, which makes post-treatment sun exposure a leading cause of complications and pigment rebound. Daily SPF 30 or higher is required before, during and after any laser series — it protects your results every bit as much as it protects your skin.

What does it cost to start a laser series at Neoderma?

Laser tattoo removal starts at $225 per session and eyebrow tattoo removal is $350 per session, including aftercare products. Laser hair removal runs $70 to $268 per area depending on size, PicoWay Resolve resurfacing is $200 to $600 per session, and vein removal starts at $200. You get an exact quote at consultation, and financing is available.
