Microblading Regret Is Real. Here's What Removal Actually Involves.

If you got your eyebrows microbladed somewhere between 2016 and 2021, there's a reasonable chance you're not thrilled with them right now.

You're not alone, and you're not being vain about it. We see this every week. The people walking into our Anaheim clinic for brow tattoo removal are not people who made a reckless decision — most of them did their research, went to a reputable artist, and got exactly what they asked for at the time. The problem is that “at the time” was five or six years ago, and two things have happened since.

The pigment changed. And so did the trend.

Here's what nobody explains clearly at the consultation for the original procedure.

Permanent makeup pigment doesn't fade evenly — it shifts color. Brow pigments are formulated to look warm and natural on day one. As they break down over years, the warm tones tend to go first, and what's left behind can read blue, gray, red, or green. This isn't a sign your artist did something wrong. It's chemistry, and it happens to work that was beautifully executed.

“Semi-permanent” was doing a lot of work in that sentence. Microblading is generally sold as lasting one to three years. What lasts one to three years is the crisp, intentional version of the result. Residual pigment can linger far longer than that — sometimes a decade — as a soft shadow that no amount of waiting will resolve.

And the look itself moved on. The bold, filled-in, precisely symmetrical brow that defined the late 2010s has given way to something softer, fluffier, and more textured. If you have a brow that was designed for the older aesthetic, it can read dated in a way that's hard to articulate but easy to see in photos. There's a particular irony we hear a lot: people who got microblading specifically to simplify their mornings are now the ones spending the most time trying to work around it with makeup.

None of this makes you a cautionary tale. Trends move. Pigment doesn't.

The mistake almost everyone makes first

Before people come to us, most have already tried the same thing: going back for another session.

This rarely works, and it's worth understanding why. If your original strokes have blurred and softened into each other, adding fresh, sharp strokes on top does not remove the blur — it adds new pigment on top of old pigment. You end up with more density, not more definition. And if your existing work has gone dark, gray, or ashy, additional passes tend to make that worse rather than better, because it's very difficult to lighten tattooed skin by adding more tattoo to it.

If your shape is significantly too thick, too low, or asymmetric, there's a limit to how much a corrective session can do. You can't carve a smaller brow out of a larger one with more pigment.

At that point you have three honest options: let it fade on its own (slow, and often incomplete), have it covered or corrected (works for some cases, not most), or have it removed or lightened with a laser.

What PicoWay removal actually involves

We use the PicoWay laser, which delivers energy in picosecond pulses — trillionths of a second. The practical significance is that it shatters pigment mechanically rather than by heating it. Less heat around the eye area means less risk to delicate skin, and, critically, no damage to the hair follicle.

That last point matters more than anything else in this article.

You will not lose your eyebrow hair. This is the single most common fear we hear, and it's usually because someone was told elsewhere that hair loss is unavoidable, or that residual color simply can't be removed. It's the reason clinics across Southern California send their difficult brow cases to us. Targeting pigment rather than follicle is a technique question, and it's what our specialists have spent twenty-five years doing.

Most people rate the discomfort at 2 to 4 out of 10. It's brief, and we numb and cool throughout.

Most clients need 2 to 4 sessions, spaced 6 to 8 weeks apart. Light microblading often clears in 1 to 2. Medium saturation usually takes 3 to 4. Dense machine-applied work can take 4 or more. Sessions are $350 each, which includes numbing and cooling.

The option most people don't know they have

You do not have to remove everything.

A large share of our brow patients aren't trying to get back to bare skin — they want their existing work lightened enough to correct a color that's gone cool, or to create a clean enough canvas for a new artist to work over. That's a different treatment plan with fewer sessions and a lower total cost, and we'll tell you at consultation if it's the better fit for what you actually want.

Two timing rules worth knowing now

If your brow tattoo is fresh, you'll need to wait 90 days before starting removal. The skin has to heal fully first. Treating skin that hasn't finished healing raises the risk of scarring, and no reputable clinic should be willing to do it. We know 90 days feels long when you're unhappy with your face. It's still the right answer.

And after your final removal session, wait about 90 days before having new work done. Same reasoning — the skin needs to fully recover before it's tattooed again.

Aftercare

For 48 hours after each session, avoid direct sun on the area, makeup on the treated skin, heavy sweating, and saunas or hot tubs. If a light scab forms over days 1 to 3, leave it alone — picking it is the main way people turn a straightforward heal into a mark that lasts.

Please also come to your appointment with your natural brow color. Don't tint beforehand — we need to see the actual pigment clearly to treat it accurately.

Why people drive to us for this

Any clinic can buy a PicoWay. Knowing how to set it on a brow is a different skill entirely.

Cosmetic tattoo removal near the eyes has a narrow margin for error, and the settings depend on things that vary from person to person: your skin type, how deep the artist worked, which pigment they used and how it's aged, and whether the area has been worked over more than once. Permanent makeup pigments are not standardized — two brows that look identical can behave like completely different materials under a laser.

The specific risk of getting it wrong is oxidation. The wrong settings can drive certain pigments darker instead of clearing them, and that is a genuinely difficult thing to undo. The other risk is treating the follicle instead of the pigment, which is why so many people are told elsewhere that hair loss is unavoidable. It isn't — it's a technique problem.
