Why Fall Is “Vein Season” for Spider Veins

Fall is vein season because treated skin is temporarily UV-sensitive, and sun on healing veins is a leading cause of lasting discoloration. Cool weather also makes compression stockings bearable and keeps blood vessels from dilating in the heat. Start now and, a few sessions later, your legs are clear by spring.

Why treat veins in fall instead of summer?

Every vein treatment leaves the skin working. Whether the vessel was collapsed with an injection or closed with laser energy, the area underneath is healing — sometimes faintly bruised, sometimes a little inflamed — and healing skin is temporarily more sensitive to UV. Sun on that skin is one of the leading causes of hyperpigmentation: brown discoloration that can take months to fade, and sometimes does not fully fade at all. Trading a thin red vein for a brown patch is nobody's idea of a win. In October, your legs are under jeans by default. In July, keeping them covered is a full-time job.

Then there is the part nobody puts on the brochure: compression. After Asclera sclerotherapy, the guidance is compression stockings day and night for 2–3 days, then during the day for a further period. Compression is not optional garnish — it is part of what makes the treatment work. And there is a wide gap between wearing medical stockings under slacks in November and wearing them through an Anaheim heat wave. Cool weather makes the aftercare something you can actually follow, which is another way of saying it makes the treatment more likely to succeed.

Heat is the third reason. Blood vessels dilate when you are hot — that is basic physiology, and it is why legs feel heavier after a long summer day. Post-treatment swelling is temporary either way, but summer heat works against it while cool weather works with it. Add the three together and fall is not a marketing season invented to fill a schedule. It is when the skin, the aftercare and the weather finally point in the same direction — the same reasoning behind fall laser season for pigment, hair and tattoo removal.

One caveat, because we are in Southern California and someone always asks: less sun is not no sun. Orange County gets usable UV in December, and freshly treated skin has no idea what month it is. Daily SPF stays non-negotiable year-round — a medical-grade sunscreen you will actually wear is the cheapest insurance there is, on your veins and on any pigment resurfacing you have running alongside them.

Asclera or laser — which is right for you?

We treat visible veins two ways at our Anaheim office, and the honest answer to which one you need usually comes down to where the vein sits and how big it is rather than personal preference. Legs generally go to sclerotherapy. Faces generally go to laser. Here is the practical comparison.

Facial vessels are the clearest case for the laser. The fine red threads across the cheeks, the broken capillaries around the nose, the flush that comes with rosacea — those respond well to the GentleMax Pro Plus, and nothing sharp goes anywhere near your face. The dual-wavelength platform is safe for all skin tones, which matters more here than most places.

What does a session actually involve?

Less than you are picturing. Sessions run roughly 15–30 minutes with no downtime, which is why most people book one around a lunch break and go back to their day.

For Asclera, we map the veins, then inject polidocanol through a very fine needle. Polidocanol has a mild anesthetic effect of its own, so most clients describe the feeling as small pinches rather than pain — this is one of the treatments people walk out of most relieved by. The solution collapses the vein so your body quietly reabsorbs it over the following weeks. Then compression: day and night for 2–3 days, then daytime for a further period, and you will leave with the exact schedule written down.

For the laser, there are no needles and no stockings — the energy is delivered through the skin and you walk straight out. Either way, you are not taking time off and you are not hiding at home. You are simply putting your legs away for the season, which is what fall lets you do anyway.

How many sessions, and when will my legs look clear?

Expect improvement after a session, and patience after that. Treated veins do not vanish at the appointment — they fade progressively as your body clears them, with continued fading over 1–2 months. Most people need multiple sessions, spaced weeks apart, for full clearance, and how many depends on how many veins you have and how stubborn they turn out to be.

That arithmetic is the entire argument for starting now. If your plan runs a few sessions spaced weeks apart, plus one to two months of fading after the last one, a fall start is finished and settled well before the first warm weekend. A May start is a series you run straight through the months you wanted to be done. Nobody wants to wear compression stockings to a barbecue.

You will get a realistic session estimate at your consultation rather than a number chosen because it sounds good. If your legs need more, we would rather tell you in September than in April.

When is it something we should not treat?

This is the part worth reading closely, because it is where a med spa should be straight with you.

We treat spider veins and reticular veins — the fine surface vessels Asclera is approved for, up to 3 mm. Large, bulging, ropy varicose veins are a different problem, and they are often a sign of something happening deeper in the venous system rather than a purely cosmetic finding. We do not treat those here. If that is what you have, we will say so at the consultation and refer you for a vascular evaluation with someone equipped to look underneath.

Treating the surface while ignoring the cause is how people end up disappointed twice. We would rather send you to the right place the first time — that instinct is a large part of how a practice stays in one Anaheim location since 2001.

What does it cost?

Asclera sclerotherapy starts at $450 per session. GentleMax Pro Plus laser vein treatment starts at $200 for small areas, which is where most facial capillary work lands. Your total depends on how many veins you want treated and how many sessions the plan calls for, so the honest version is that you get a real number at consultation, once someone has actually looked at your legs.

Because a series is spread across months, the cost spreads across months too — one of the quieter advantages of starting in fall rather than compressing everything into spring.

Spider vein treatment FAQ

Why is fall the best time to treat spider veins?

Treated skin is temporarily UV-sensitive, and sun on healing or bruised veins is a leading cause of hyperpigmentation that can take months to fade or become permanent. Fall means less incidental sun and legs that are covered anyway. Compression stockings are also far easier to wear in cool weather, and heat dilates vessels, which can worsen temporary post-treatment swelling.

Does sclerotherapy hurt?

Most people find it very tolerable. Asclera is injected through a very fine needle, and polidocanol has a mild anesthetic effect of its own, so the sensation is usually described as small pinches rather than pain. Sessions run roughly 15 to 30 minutes with no downtime, and the laser option involves no needles at all.

How long do I have to wear compression stockings?

Asclera's guidance is compression day and night for the first 2 to 3 days, then during the day for a further period, and we will give you the exact schedule at your visit. This is one more reason fall works: stockings are far more comfortable in cool weather and disappear under long pants.

How many sessions will I need, and when will my legs look clear?

You should see visible improvement after a session, with veins continuing to fade over the following one to two months as your body reabsorbs them. Full clearance commonly takes multiple sessions spaced weeks apart. Starting in fall means the series and the fading are both finished before shorts, skirts and swimwear weather returns in spring.

Can you treat large varicose veins?

No, and we will tell you that directly. We treat spider and reticular veins up to 3 mm with Asclera, and facial vessels with the GentleMax Pro Plus laser. Large, bulging varicose veins can signal an underlying vascular issue, so we refer those out for a proper vascular evaluation rather than treating the surface.
