Two questions come up on this call before anyone asks about price. Is a laser safe that close to my eye, and will I still have eyelashes afterward?

Both deserve a real answer rather than a pat on the arm, so they are the first two sections below. The short version: shields go in before the laser is ever fired, and your lashes are not what the laser is looking for. The longer version is worth reading, because knowing exactly what happens in that room is what makes this appointment feel manageable instead of frightening.

Why permanent eyeliner stops looking good

Almost nobody comes to us because the eyeliner was done badly. Most of the work we treat was carefully applied and looked exactly right the week it healed. What changes is the ink — and the face around it.

It migrates. Tattoo pigment sits in living skin, and over the years it spreads slightly past where it was placed. A crisp line widens and blurs into a soft smudge along the lid. In the mirror that reads as tired rather than defined, which is the opposite of what you paid for.

The color shifts. Permanent makeup pigment does not fade evenly. Warm tones break down first, so what is left behind tends to go blue, grey, or a cool ashy shade. That is chemistry, not anyone's mistake, and it happens to beautifully executed work.

The placement dates. Liner drawn for an older trend — thicker, more winged, sitting lower on the lid — can age a face in a way that is hard to put into words and easy to see in photographs.

And some people simply want their bare lash line back, or need the old pigment cleared before someone new works over it. Every one of those is reason enough.

Is it safe to laser that close to the eye?

Yes, with the protection this area requires. Before any laser pass near the lash line, we place medical-grade protective eye shields. The laser is not fired until they are in position, and they stay in for the whole laser portion — which is a few minutes, not an hour.

That one step is the reason this treatment can be offered at all. The shields are purpose-built medical equipment, and they physically cover the eye itself, so the only thing exposed to the laser is the skin being treated. They are not sunglasses, not goggles resting on your face, and not something anyone should skip because a pass looks quick. If a provider ever proposes working near your lash line without them, that is your answer about the provider.

What the appointment is actually like

Plan on being with us considerably longer than the laser runs. Almost the entire visit is numbing and preparation, which is exactly how it should be.

The part people brace for is over quickly. Topical numbing is applied first and given the full hour it needs, and the laser passes themselves take a few minutes — most of what you will remember about the appointment is the waiting.

How many sessions, and what does it cost?

Eyeliner tattoo removal at our Anaheim clinic is $795. Most clients need 2 to 4 sessions on average, spaced 6 to 8 weeks apart, and where you land depends on the color of the ink, the quality of the pigment used, how deeply it was saturated into the skin, and how it has aged since.

The two 90-day rules

Two waiting periods bracket this process, and both are about healing rather than scheduling.

If your eyeliner is fresh, removal has to wait 90 days. Tattooed skin needs to finish healing before a laser touches it; going early is how a straightforward process ends up leaving a scar. Three months is a long time to live with something on your face that you already dislike, and we will still hold that line.

After your last removal session, give the skin about 90 days before any new work. The same healing window applies in reverse. If you already have an artist booked for new liner, tell us at consultation and we will plan your sessions around that date.

Aftercare, and the one thing not to do

For 48 hours after each session: no direct sun on the area, no makeup on the treated skin, no heavy sweating, and no saunas or hot tubs.

If a light scab forms, let it come away on its own. Picking is how a straightforward heal turns into a lasting mark — of everything on this list, it is the instruction that can genuinely change your result.

One request for beforehand rather than after: please do not tint or dye ahead of your appointment. Your provider needs to see the true color of the pigment to treat it accurately.

Why the settings matter more than the machine

Any clinic can buy a picosecond laser. Reading a particular pigment on a particular eyelid is the part that takes years.

Permanent makeup pigments are not standardized. Two eyeliner tattoos that look identical in the chair can behave like completely different materials under a laser, depending on what went into them and how those ingredients have broken down since. The risk of guessing is specific: the wrong settings can drive certain pigments darker through oxidation, and that is genuinely difficult to undo.
